Q&A

Katherine – I am about to order the Marlow 200cm wardrobe from John Lewis. I saw a previous comment on here about fitting the wardrobe around skirting board so is flush to the wall. The response said that standard installation does not include this, but also that this would have to be done during installation.
Can I clarify whether this is something which can potentially be organised with the fitters (presumably for an additional cost), since it must be done at installation?
Second question is to check whether (if for any reason this doesn’t work out) and if there is a remaining small gap between the wardrobe and the wall (the width of a skirting board) whether the wardrobe can still be attached to the wall?
Lastly I wanted to check that the wardrobe is OK to be attached to a stud wall? Read more…

You could remove the skirting prior to installation with a view to re-fitting afterwards, this way it can be cut to fit exactly without any disruption. It isn’t something the fitting team are going to be able to do for you though.

The wardrobe can be secured to the wall since the fixing brackets will span any slight gap and will not be visible at eye-level.

Yes, the wardrobes can be fixed to a stud wall provided the correct fixings are used or, ideally, the fixing brackets are located directly where the studs are. The fitting team can do this.

Joe – Can you recommend the best way to cut plug socket access holes in the back of a Marlow 3m sliding door wardrobe please? And will I be able to do this when the installers are assembling the wardrobe please? Read more…

Hi Joe, there are plenty of guides and videos available online with detailed instructions on cutting access holes.

However, it is not advisable to provide a connection to electrical sockets which will become inaccessible for maintenance/repair once the wardrobe is in situ.

Accepting this is something that people undertake regardless, you may do this at the time if the installation team agree to it. They may, however, object on the grounds that the wardrobe should be in perfect condition when they leave site, in which case you will need to make alternative arrangements.

Jacqueline – Is there anywhere in the Central Belt of Scotland where I can see examples of the colours (off-white and pebble grey) used for Marlow wardrobes. It’s difficult getting a room ready- decorated for the furniture when looking at colours online. I should be very grateful if you can help. Read more…

Hi Jacqueline, the Marlow range is available on-line only and is not show-roomed. The colour options are fairly neutral for this reason.

James – Good morning I have a John Lewis Marlow 200cm Hinged Door Wardrobe with Mirrors & 3 Drawers, Pebble Grey. We are moving house and want to take our wardrobe with us but unfortunately I can not find the installation manual if you can send me the installation/dismantle instructions would be greatly appreciated. Read more…

Good morning James, the Marlow wardrobes are installed by a dedicated installation team at the point of delivery and, consequently, there are no published instructions.

Linda– I have Marlow 200cm Hinged Door Wardrobe with 3 Drawers. I am moving house and need the instruction manual to enable me to rebuild at new address please. Can you help? Read More…

Please see above…

Caroline – I read a review on JL website … someone said they’d removed their skirting board to enable a better fitting of their Marlow wardrobe. I ,of course, now can’t find that review and would like to know if removing the skirting board is advised? Read more…

With the skirting removed you will achieve a closer flush-fit to the wall but this is not something we would advise unless you are a competent DIY’er or are able to arrange for a professional to carry out the work.

Sid – Just bought Marlow 2500 wardrobe in pebble grey. I need a matching side panel to fill in gaps both sides. 2.2m length. Can you help please. Read more…

Additional parts are not readily available although the installation team may be able to help.

John – Could you please tell me if the Marlow wardrobe range are delivered flat pack or semi built as we don’t have a large staircase approach and directly opposite the stairs is a wall at maybe 3 foot away so unless they are flat pack they will not go up the stairs. Read more…

The wardrobes are assembled in-situ by a dedicated installation team John. It is possible access may still be restricted due to the length of side panels but it is unlikely.

Christian – Where can I view the Marlow wardrobes? Are they best placing directly on carpet or having new carpet laid up to it? Read more…

The wardrobes are only available to order online and are not on display in any stores Christian.

For a regular floor it doesn’t matter whether they are placed on a carpet or not although the finish will usually be better if the carpet is already laid, this also eliminates the risk of damage to the units.

Daniel – Is it possible to make a 3.5m set in the Marlow wardrobe range (eg by adding a single wardrobe to the left of an existing 3m set? Read more…

There isn’t a 50 cm option that would do this but you could combine a 250cm wardrobe with a 100cm wardrobe.

Kerry – I am just about ready to order my marlow wardrobes from John lewis. 300cm wide x 220cm high 6 doors. No mirrors or drawers. My builder is taking space from am adjoining bedroom. He is taking 310 x 230. Will this be OK for them to be assembled and pushed into place. Or what would you suggest as minimum space? Labour to move the stud wall is very expensive so just want to get it right. Many thanks. Read more…

Hi Kerry, you don’t say what the existing room space is so I can’t give you a definitive answer. However, there needs to be sufficient floor space for the units to lie flat during assembly as well as working space for two people. If you explain this to your builder he should be able to advise further.

I would caution against ordering the wardrobes until you are confident the installation team will have sufficient access.

Best wishes.

Andrew – I have ordered the Marlow 300cm Mirrored Hinged Wardrobe in Pebble Grey from John Lewis Online and want to purchase accessories but cannot do this on the John Lewis website. I telephoned them and they said that the supplier would contact me direct, but I have not had a call back. I want to purchase an extra 2 hanging rails (at 96.4cm) and was querying the cost of the internal draw unit and if it was at a reasonable price, purchase one of those as well? Read more…

Hi Andrew, the problem stems from the fact that accessories for the Marlow wardrobes were previously only available in stores. Before your items are dispatched you will be contacted to arrange a suitable delivery/installation date and you will be able to arrange any extras at this time.

Hope this helps and best wishes.

John – Would like to buy your Marlow wardrobe but need to match the grey in order to paint the skirting board and drawers. Is it possible to send me samples of the different greys before I buy the wardrobe please? Read more…

Hi John
The Marlow Bedroom Range is on display in selected stores. If you call them on 03452 661805 they will be able to tell you the nearest store to you with the range in stock.

Lisa – I am interested in the Marlow bedroom furniture but John Lewis have confirmed that they do not have it on display in any stores! Do you have swatches of the Havana and Pebble grey that could be sent tone please? Read more…

Hi Lisa
I am sorry but the Marlow range is produced by a third-party supplier and, as a consequence, swatches are not available.

You are not the first person to ask this and I hope, eventually, that a swatch service becomes available. Not that this will be any comfort to you.

Apologies again for this issue.

Wendy – I’m interested in Marlow wardrobes in white. As whites vary could I have a sample of this white as I have existing off white furniture it needs to blend with. Is it a cream white or grey white? Read more…

Hi Wendy
I’m sorry but the Marlow range is supplied by a third-party manufacturer and, alas, samples are not available.

The range is, however, in some John lewis stores. You can call them on 03452 661805 and they will advise if the Marlow range is available to view in a store locally.

The white units are a greyish tint though and you are right to check if this will be compatible with existing units. Unfortunately, because all white furniture will have a slight tint of something, it is notoriously difficult to match.

Apologies for the lack of assistance and I hope John Lewis can be of more help?

Mr Elliot – I have wasted considerable time looking at the Marlow wardrobes on John Lewis, and then on your own site. I cannot believe anyone would spend £1000+ on a product they could not initially view for quality. There is something very dodgy about this company and the manufacturers it represents. I sincerely hope this is not the future of retailing. This system of ‘comments’ is ridiculous also. There are no dates on your posters comments, and you do not request an email for making a personal reply. Read more…

Hello Mr Elliott
Regrettably, the Marlow range is one of a few collections that John Lewis do not display in their stores and this can, as you are finding, prove frustrating when all you want to do is see the finished article ‘in the flesh’ so to speak.

Obviously, since Marlow wardrobes are a popular product, it’s apparent that some people are comfortable with ordering online only and it’s not really that new a concept. People were buying furniture from catalogue companies before the internet was around.
I appreciate though that this isn’t for everyone, which is why some traditional ‘bricks and mortar’ furniture businesses are continuing to thrive.

Regards the commenting, most enquiries tend to be on the same subject; either products that are out of stock, or (in your case) are not available to view. By publishing these in question and answer form enables people to see if a similar query has already been answered.
Also, as with a lot of contact forms, those which request an email address must comply with onerous legislation around the retention of personal information. The format of our commenting system requires no personal information to be submitted or retained.
Again, it doesn’t suit everyone, but it ensures questions are answered efficiently and openly.

Hope that helps?

I sincerely hope you manage to find a range of wardrobes to your liking that you are also able to view first. Best wishes and thanks for your frank and honest opinion.

Mr Elliot – I appreciate your reply, thank you. Also format of your comments page now makes sense to me re. personal data. Just wish I could see the Marlow Wardrobe somewhere. Do you know where they are made, or have any information on the construction, i.e.. materials use in the doors and carcass possibly? I will go to John Lewis and ask ask about the Marlow range, as they offer extra materials or options such as LED lighting and drawer inserts, and therefore must have more information somewhere. I thank you again. Read more…

The Marlow wardrobes and drawers are made in Germany and made from particle board with a scratch-resistant melamine coating. They are well made and come with a 10 year guarantee.

The units come direct from the manufacturer and are assembled on site by the company’s own installation team. It’s likely your local John Lewis store will be able to give you more information since they should have some experience from previous customers?

Hope that helps and best wishes.

Kay – Hi can the Marlow wardrobes be fixed to the wall? Read more…

Yes

Julia – I want to order Marlow wardrobes but my ceiling is 237cm. Will it be possible to build these 220 cm robes and stand them up. Also, do they need the room cleared or can they assemble upright or on the bed. Read more…

Since you have height clearance of 17cm, yes the wardrobe will fit. For assembly you should allow enough space for the wardrobe to be laid flat on the floor plus some working space of around 20%. You may need to remove furniture from the room to facilitate this.

Val – I have just purchased the Marlow 4 door wardrobes which I love. Alas we are moving ……is it possible to dismantle these and take with us? Read more…

Yes, of course you can.

Sarah – Regarding the Marlow wardrobes, how do these work with skirting boards, do they have the shape cut out? Read more…

Hi Sarah, the wardrobes are supplied in standard form. Any modification to ensure a flush fit to the wall will need to be carried out during installation.

The assembly service only covers putting the wardrobe and fittings together, any further custom works will need to be arranged yourself.

Gary – I am looking to purchase a number of Marlow wardrobes in Graphite, but I want to be able to see them first. JL’s website is showing that they are not in any store in the country, so how do I get to see the colour and the build quality before spending £000’s online? Read more…

Hi Gary and thanks for getting in touch. The Marlow Wardrobes are only available online I am afraid. They are supplied direct from the manufacturer, based in Germany, and assembled in-situ by their own team.

It is unfortunate that John Lewis do not display the wardrobes in store but, alas, they only have so much space available and currently give priority to other products.

As you will have seen on the John Lewis site, the range has very good reviews and John Lewis have been selling them for quite some time with no issues that we are aware of.

However, I do understand that you may not want to place an order without seeing what you are buying first – and you are certainly not the only person expressing this concern. It’s an issue with online retail generally that some people are comfortable with and some people are not.

I am sorry I can’t be of any help on this occasion and I sincerely hope you manage to find a suitable alternative.

Tony – We have just had a dressing room and en suite built . The dressing room measures 210cms wide on the wall that the 200cms marlow is going on, the length of the dressing room is 2 metres. There is 1 door way into the dressing room from the shower room and 1 opening into the dressing room, from the main bedroom. The width of the opening into the dressing room is 160 cms and the height is 2 metres. The height of the dressing room is 250cms. Just inquiring if I have enough space for fitters to erect the wardrobe. Read more…

Hi Tony, it sounds like it’s going to be a tight fit? Normally, as a guide, we would suggest you have enough free floor space for the wardrobe to lay down flat and, of course, enough space around this for two people to work. You may have sufficient space in the adjoining bedroom but transferring the carcass of the wardrobe into the dressing room may present a problem depending on the angle of access and available headroom.

A custom solution that integrates with the build of the dressing room may be the best way forward?

Karen – I am about to order some Marlow wardrobes from John Lewis – 250cm Marlow Mirrored Hinged Wardrobe, off white. However, the space they are to fit into has a sloping ceiling (back wall), which will require the back and side panels of the wardrobe to be cut to fit. With John Lewis assembly is included in the cost, but in order for them to be assembled, they would need to be adjusted. Is this something that the fitters would be able to do at an additional cost on site? Read more…

Hi Karen, the assembly service is based upon a standard fit, not a custom one. You are assuming the panels can be cut to accommodate without knowing where critical fixings are, you also assume the fitters are qualified carpenters which they are not.

Bear in mind that any such works will invalidate your guarantee and consumer rights.

Alan – I have recently purchased Marlow wardrobes from John Lewis in Pebble Grey. I am trying to find out the RAL number of the pebble grey colour. Do you have contact details for the manufacturer in Germany so I can ask them the question? Read more…

Hi Alan, we are not able to connect you direct with the supplier. However, please bear in mind that there can be subtle changes in colour from batch to batch even when a specific RAL colour has been used. Lighting and decor at the final installation location will also have a huge impact on how a colour ‘looks to the eye’ which is why attempts at exact colour matching often do not give an ideal result.

You will also find that paints of the same shade can also differ in appearance depending on the type of solvent used, a water-based matt finish, for instance, will not exactly match an oil-based gloss finish even when mixed on the same day, to the exact same formula.

Manufacturers are always reluctant to give exact colour details for these exact reasons. A professional painter may have access to sophisticated tools when requiring a perfect match but there is also an element of skill and experience that comes into play, plus a degree of trial and error. It simply isn’t a case of matching a colour value as one can with a car paint – where codes are issued on a much more detailed basis.

Although less convenient, the old-school use of tester pots will usually yield a more satisfactory match.
